Arctic Hare

Arctic Animals, Australia Animals, Australian Animals

The arctic hare is not the same thing as a snowshoe hare. It is not even the same as a rabbit. There are two hare that live in Arctic areas - they are the arctic hare and the tundra hare. The major difference between them is where they live, and the color their tail turns. The arctic hare is larger than a snowshoe. His fur is long and white all the way through in the winter and his ears are blackish around the edges. In the summer his coat is grayish brown on top and white beneath.
Identification:

Size: 22-28 in.
Weight: 9-12 lb.
Color: Brown in the summer, white in the winter. Ears tipped with black year round.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Short ears, and a fur coat that changes color with the seasons make the arctic and tundra hare special.

Breeding: Leverets born June thru July. Usually there are 4-8 in a litter. They are fully furred and have their eyes open.
Habitat:

Range: Lepus articus live in Canada and Greenland. Lepus othus lives only in Alaska. The arctic hare likes to live on the rocky slopes and upland tundra of the Arctic. They like to live in groups. They don’t like to live in low places or wooded areas.

Diet: The food they eat is mostly willow - the leaves, shoots, bark and roots - and grasses, flowers, saxifrage and crowberry.

How is a hare different from a rabbit?

The major difference between a rabbit and a hare is that the young of a hare are born open-eyed and furred. The rabbit’s young are born naked and with closed eyes. Hare are able to leave the nest soon after they are born but rabbits don’t even open their eyes for 7-10 days.

Some people say that the length of the ears is part of the difference but arctic hare have short ears while hare outside of Arctic areas have long ears.
Why does an arctic hare have camouflage?

The arctic hare looks a lot different from the rabbits and hares that you see anywhere outside of the Arctic. In the summertime the arctic hare is brown with black flecks. This helps to camouflage it during the growing season. When the weather starts to change the arctic hare starts to change too. So that during the winter its coat is completely white. This change helps to protect it during the winter.
Why are the ears of an arctic hare so short?

The ears are so small to help keep the hare warm during the cold winters on the tundra. The small ears do not have a lot of area to have the blood vessels exposed to the cold so more heat is kept down in the body to help the hare stay warm.
What is the world’s smallest “Big Foot”?

Arctic hare would fit this description. The feet of an arctic hare are huge compared to other rabbits. Having big feet is like having snowshoes. They help them to stay on top of the snow. If they could not do this they wouldn’t be able to get away from their predators.
When do snowballs jump?

Arctic hare sit out on the tundra in large groups. Whenever threatened by a wolf or fox or other predator they scatter in all directions. This makes it harder for them to be caught. It looks sort of like big snowballs jumping around the tundra.
What is a baby arctic hare called?

You call a baby hare a leveret. When an arctic hare has a litter there are usually 4-8 leverets born. The leverets are born in June in the Arctic areas. They are darker than their parents and their fur is sort of black looking.
Where do arctic hares live?hare in summer

Unlike rabbits arctic hares like to live in nests. Rabbits prefer to live in burrows. This is good because it would be very hard for a arctic hare to dig a burrow in the Arctic.
How do arctic people benefit from the arctic hare?

The Arctic people do not eat the arctic hare a lot. It is not one of the more important foods for them. They prefer other meats and only eat hare if nothing else is available. They use the fur for shoe linings and robes:

The Arctic:
The Arctic is a very cold, windy, and often snowy biome located around the North Pole. When referring to the Arctic, people usually mean the part of the earth within the Arctic Circle (an imaginary circle around the Earth, parallel to the Equator and 23 degrees 28 minutes from the North Pole, that is, above about 75 degrees North Latitude). Although there is no land at the North Pole, the icy Arctic Ocean is teeming with life ranging from the microscopic (like zooplankton) to the huge (like whales).

There is also a lot of land within the Arctic Circle (northern parts of Asia, Europe, and North America). Land within the Arctic Circle is tundra, and it supports less life most other biomes because of the cold temperatures, strong, dry winds, and permafrost (permanently-frozen soil). Long periods of darkness (in the winter) and light (in the summer) also affect Arctic life.

Arctic Land Zones:
The most extreme Arctic land (the closest to the North Pole) is called the High Arctic Zone; this polar desert supports very little animal or plant life (less than 5 percent of the land area is covered with vegetation) due to a very short, dry growing season, dry air, permafrost, poor soils, and a lack of pollinating insects. The warmer Arctic region is called the Low Arctic Zone. This area supports more life, with more than 90 percent of the land area covered with hardy, cold-and-dry-adapted vegetation.

Arctic Animals:
Animals that live in the Arctic (either full time or seasonally) are adapted to extreme conditions. Many animals who overwinter in the Arctic (like the Arctic fox and the ermine) have a coat that thickens and changes color to white during the winter as camouflage in the snow (blending into the background is called cryptic coloration).

Some animals hibernate during the cold season; they go into a very deep, sleep-like state in which their heartbeat slows down. These animals often hibernate in an underground burrow or pit. Some hibernators include skunks, chipmunks, and some bears (but these bears are not true hibernators, they go into a state that is closer to a normal deep sleep).

Many animals (like the Arctic tern) spend the summer months in the Arctic, but leave as the weather turns frigid and food becomes scarce (these animals return again the next summer, repeating this pattern year after year). This behavior is called migrating.

We all know that the one thing our kids are outstandingly interested in are animals, you can see the sparkle in the eyes whenever they see an animal they have not observed before. Remember the first time you brought your kids to the zoo, remember how excited and thrilled properties were to see the various animals. You can’t almost stop them with all the questions they have regarding all the animals properties hold seen. Now that natural interest of kids about creatures and wildlife is very good for parents because we can teach them about the environment and how various creatures dwell in their own habitat. But you know kids today have a very very brief treatment span and if you just keep on talking right about animals without any visual material they will be for a long while asleep before you know it. Children discover best when properties are visually stimulated, try giving your kid a book with no pictures in it and see if they spend five minutes with it.

Animals of the Rainforest

Overview

Animals Lyrics, Animals Mating, Animals of the Rainforest, Animals Pictures, Animals Videos

Rainforests are defined as dense forests with high amounts of
annual rainfall, often located in tropical regions. There are two
types of rainforest: tropical and temperate. Tropical Rainforest
is often located between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic
of Cancer. Regions that have Tropical Rainforest growth include
Brazil and northern South America, West Central Africa, India
and Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Northeast Australia.
Temperate Rainforests are located in several regions across the
world including the Pacific Coast of the United States and
Canada, and various regions of Europe, Russia and Eastern
Asia. Temperate Rainforest may often have more coniferous
trees such as pines, firs and redwoods; whereas Tropical
Rainforest contains more broad-leafed trees.

In 1917, the rainforest was described by naturalist William
Beebe: “Yet another continent of life remains to be discovered,
not upon the earth, but one to two hundred feet above it,
extending over thousands of square miles … there awaits a rich
harvest for the naturalist who overcomes the obstacles-
gravitation, ants, thorns, rotten trunks- and mounts to the
summits of the jungle trees.”

Layers of the Rainforest

Emergent Layer - Emergent Trees reach high above the average
tree height of the rainforest canopy. These trees can grow to
heights of 200 feet or more. Emergent trees do not generally
grow close to one another, and will endure different conditions
than other trees of the rainforest. They will receive more
sunlight and less moisture because they are not confined to the
shady and humid conditions that exist beneath the rainforest
canopy. Animals that inhabit emergent trees include a variety of
insects, some species of bats and and some species of birds
including Harpy Eagles.

Canopy - The rainforest canopy is composed of trees that grow
to heights between 100 - 150 feet. The canopy is home to a
large biodiversity of plant and animal life. Animals that inhabit
the rainforest canopy include Lemurs, Spider Monkeys, Sloths,
Toucans, Orangutans and Parrots. Some of these animals find
most or all of their food high in the trees of the canopy so that
they will rarely, if ever, need to go to the rainforest floor. The
canopy also acts as a reverse umbrella for the rainforest. It
traps moisture and humidity underneath the leaves of its trees
and also blocks out sunlight.

Understory - The understory is the layer of the rainforest
between the canopy and the forest floor. Here, the leaves of
trees and plants are broad and large so that they can capture
what little light gets through the canopy. The understory is dark
and humid, and has a large amount of insect life.

Rainforest Floor - The rainforest floor only receives between 1 -
2% of the sunlight that hits the upper layers of the rainforest.
Very little plant life grows here as a result. Although the ground
is covered by a layer of decomposing vegetation, the top soil is
surprisingly poor in nutrients. The rainforest floor is very humid
due to the evaporation of water from the leaves and shrubs that
are found in this layer. This humidity will help speed up the
process of decomposition of the matter. A wide variety of life
including insects and larger animals inhabits the rainforest floor.
Some of the larger animals that live in this layer include
Jaguars, Bengal Tigers, Okapis, and Southern Cassowaries.

Life in the Rainforest

It is believed that over 50% of the world’s species of plants and
animals are found in the rainforest. Amazingly, only cover 6 -
7% of the total land surface on Earth is covered by rainforest.
On average, there are between 20 to 80 different species of
trees per acre. There is also a wide variety of animal life found
in the rainforest. Many of the animals have special adaptations
that allow them to live in the tropical conditions, but they would
not survive outside of this ecosystem. These animals include
but are not limited to Toucans, Parrots, Resplendant Quetzals,
Sloths, Orangutans, Gorillas, Queen Alexandra Birdwing
Butterflies, and Lemurs.

There are also indigenous cultures of people that live in and
depend on the rainforest. Some of the tribes that can be found
here include the Yanomami and Kayapo tribes of the Amazon,
the Huli of Papau New Guinea, and the Pygmies of Central
Africa. Some tribes have had little, if any, contact with outside
civilizations, while others seek to legally protect the lands on
which they live. These cultures have adapted to the conditions
of the rainforest, and have a deep understanding of the
ecosystem. They often have knowledge of medicinal herbs and
plants, and understand how to cultivate rainforest land without
upsetting the balance of nutrients in the soils.

Deforestation

Much of the world’s rainforest has been severely impacted by
human activities. These activities usually include deforestation
for the purposes of logging, growing crops, urban settlement, or
raising farm animals such as cattle. As the population of the
world continues to increase, the amount of deforestation of the
rainforest may also continue to rise.

Unfortunately, we are losing many species of plants and
animals found in the rainforest due to these activities. Potential
medicines that have not even been discovered yet may be at
risk of never being found due to deforestation. Many rainforest
animals are endangered due to these activities. Cultures of
indigenous peoples are also at risk of losing their way of life.

There are currently many organizations working to protect the
rainforest. Some of them include the Rainforest Alliance, The
Nature Conservancy, and the Rainforest Action Network. These
sites provide information on ways we can all help to conserve
one of the world’s most valuable and endangered ecosystems.

Summary

The rainforest is a vital lifeline of Earth, as well as one of the
most unique ecosystems of our planet. It contains a wide
variety of plants, animals and people, and all are important to
the balance of nature. While it is not too late to save the
rainforest ecosystems of the world, there is still much work to
be done if we will succeed in protecting this valuable resource.

Animals Lyrics

Around And Around lyricsThey said the joint was rockin’

Goin’ ’round and ’round

Oh baby, with that crazy sound

And it never stopped rockin’

Til the moon went down

You know it sounds so sweet

I gotta take me a chance

Rose out of my seat

You know I had to dance

Started movin’ my feet

Oh, clappin’ my hands

And we kept on rockin’

Goin’ ’round and ’round

Oh baby, with that crazy sound

And it never stopped rockin’

Til the moon went down

And we kept on rockin’

Goin’ ’round and ’round

Oh baby, with that crazy sound

And it never stopped rockin’

Til the moon went down

Twelve o’clock

And the place was packed

Twelve o’clock

And we kept on rockin’

Goin’ ’round and ’round

Oh baby, with that crazy sound

And it never stopped rockin’

Til the moon went down

And we kept on rockin’

Goin’ ’round and ’round

Oh baby, with that crazy sound

And it never stopped rockin’

Til the moon went down

Animals Lyrics

Monterey lyricsThe people came and listened

Some of them came and played

Others gave flowers away, yes they did

Down in Monterey

Down in Monterey

Young Gods smiled upon the crowd

Their music being born of love

Children danced night and day

Religion was being born

Down in Monterey

The birds and the airplane did fly

Oh, Ravi Shankars music made me cry

The Who exploded into fire and light

Hugh Masakela’s music was black as night

The Grateful Dead blew everybodies mind

Jimi Hendrix baby, believe me, set the world on fire, yeah

His Majesty, Prince Jones, smiled as he moved among the crowd

Ten thousand electric guitars were grooving real loud, yeah

You want to find the truth in life

Don’t pass music by

and you know I would not lie, no I would not lie,

No, I would not lie

Down in Monterey

Three days of understanding of moving with one another

Even the cops grooved with us

Do you believe me, yeah?

Down in Monterey

I think that maybe I’m dreaming

Monterey

Down in monterey

Did you hear what I said?

Animals Lyrics

Anything lyricsFor you, my friend, I’d do anything

Shine your shoes, anything

Lose your blues, make love to you

Take you under my wing, anything

For you, my hero, I’d do anything

Paint your picture, anything

Kiss your photograph even though I know you’d laugh

Stand beneath your wings, Oh, anything

And for you, my love, I would do anything

Kiss your feet and everything

Suffer your pain but I’d ride your train

Spread our tiny wings, baby, anything

And for you, my son, I’d do everything

Protect your mind from everything

I could read your lies, dry tears from your eyes

Spread your tiny wings, anything

‘Cause everything is anything

And everything is anything
